Coffee, Butter & Oil
Coffee...with butter and coconut oil?
I know what you may be thinking, and hey, even I was skeptical at first. But trust me, if you haven’t tried adding butter and coconut oil to your coffee, you will definitely need to try it. And l’ll tell you why.
Drinking coffee with butter and coconut oil (or “Bulletproof Coffee”), was popularized by Bulletproof founder Dave Asprey. The coffee’s rich and creamy taste is quickly becoming widely recognized by health & nutrition experts as an excellent means to provide tremendous energy for extended periods.
Those who drink coffee with butter and coconut oil (instead of a traditional breakfast) report serious improvements in energy, less hunger pangs and increased focus. This was true of myself, my wife, several of my clients and many friends. Virtually everyone I know who has tried coffee with butter and coconut oil has felt great!
The Coffee
Coffee has been shown to improve focus, memory recall, and performance. Some studies even show it lowers your risk of stroke and diabetes. Coffee also has thermogenic properties, meaning it stimulates fat loss.
Coffee is loaded with polyphenols, which are antioxidants that function as prebiotics, feeding the good bacteria in your gut.
When choosing your coffee look for organic beans from Central America which tend to be lower in toxins than other regions.
Why Fat In Your Coffee?
Drinking coffee with butter and coconut oil on an empty stomach will bring the benefits of mental focus and reduced food cravings. Fat is also a building block of healthy cell walls and hormones and is needed for fertility, temperature regulation, and shock absorption.
Drinking coffee with fat will propel your body into state of mild ketosis. Normally your body burns carbohydrates for fuel. Ketosis is a beneficial state where your body burns fat for energy instead of sugar. Your body will enter this state when you have a lot of ketones in your blood. Anybody out there want to to burn additional fat?
By drinking coffee with fat, you will also temporarily suppress all bad gut bacteria.
Consuming fat is a signal for your body to produce more bile. So by eating more healthy saturated fats you can increase bile production and excrete more toxins. If you don’t have enough bile, your body won’t be able to bind and excrete enough toxins, and this can lead to an accumulation of toxins in the body. Bile helps break down and absorb fats, so the amount of bile your liver secretes is a factor in weight loss and detoxing.
I Can’t Believe It’s Butter!
Despite butter’s negative reputation in years past, high-quality butter is now experiencing a renaissance. One reason for this is because of butter’s high concentration of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which has also proven to reduce belly fat, enhance weight loss, and boost heart health.
Blending the butter (see recipe below) breaks it up into something called micelles, which allow your body to use fat for energy. By switching from milk or cream to butter, you get nearly 3 1/2 times the amount of antioxidants from your coffee. Butter also contains butyric acid, which can help heal the gut and directly lowers inflammation in the brain.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is known to be an anti-fungal agent. Coconut oil contains a high percentage of the similar fats found in human breast milk which makes the gut a less attractive place for bad bacteria.
For an even stronger form of coconut oil you can try MCT oil (a liquid coconut oil extract high in medium- chain triglycerides). Many people use coconut oil instead of MCT oil, since it’s easier to find and much cheaper.
What If I Don’t Like Coffee?
That’s alright. I have personally witnessed several non-coffee drinkers convert because they began drinking coffee with butter and coconut oil. Now its your turn!
